Last week we had our first open fire of the year. Over the last few weeks the children have been practising how to stay safe around the fire pit, in preparation for having the fire lit. They all listened very carefully to Anne as she explained the safety rules and what to do. They toasted marshmallows and cooked popcorn.
The children were asked “what did we use” – wood and hot flames when it was burning.
“How did we keep safe” – fire gloves so you don’t get burnt. If smoke blows in your face, out your hands on your face and close your eyes and turn away.
“What will we use to put the fire out” – water
“What is coming off the fire when water is added” – steam, smoke
“Why is the wood black” – it’s burnt
