Mission Team

During Advent 2017, an Area Mission took place across the new Partnership of Pontop. It involved Sacred Heart School along with ten parishes, St. Bede’s Secondary School, Lanchester and other Catholic primary schools in the local area:

  • All Saints, Lanchester
  • Our Blessed Lady and St. Joseph, Brooms
  • Our Blessed Lady Immaculate, Blackhill
  • Our Lady of the Rosary, Shotley Bridge
  • Joseph’s, Stanley
  • Patrick’s, Dipton
  • Patrick’s, Consett
  • Pius X, Consett
  • Teresa, Annfield Plain

Before the Mission, a group of children were chosen to learn a dance associated with the theme of the Mission ‘Unbroken’ along with other children from other primary schools who then taught the dance to the rest of the school. A group of Year 5 children were selected to be part of the Mission Team prior to the Area Mission and worked with staff in school and Ruth Corless who helped the children to prepare for the Mission.

Ruth and the staff worked with the children weekly to help them understand what it means to be a good leader, help them to prepare liturgies independently, leading them in stillness and prayer, how to help others in our parish and overall preparing them for the Pontop Partnership Mission with other schools and parishes in our area. These children set a great example to other children and helped our school to become closer with our own and other parishes and schools.

The mission team has continued with the graduating mission team ‘training’ a new mission team at the beginning of each academic year. The mission team continue to be involved in preparing liturgies, leading others in stillness and prayer and helping others in the parish.
