Admissions at Sacred Heart Primary School
Admissions Procedure:
At Sacred Heart we are committed to the achievement of every single child regardless of his or her ability. I am proud to say that our children not only develop a growth mindset but make exceptional progress from their starting points and achieve outstanding results. As a school we aim to provide and promote Catholic Education, enabling everyone to reach their full potential in union with God by “Growing Together, Learning Together, Achieving Together in Christ”
We truly believe that working in partnership with families is everything – when we welcome the child, we welcome the family. If you’re unsure as to whether Sacred Heart is the place for you and your child, please give us a call on 01207 270396 and we would be happy to chat with you about what we can offer and provide your family as part of our school community.
During Term Time (In Year Transfers):
If you’re interested in joining our school mid-year, please give us a ring and we can chat about making sure that Sacred Heart can offer you an enriching education from start to finish!
An application can be made for a place for a child at any time outside the admission round and the child will be admitted where there are available places. An application should be made to the school by completing the in-year admissions application form and returning it to Gateshead Council’s admissions team.
Where there are places available but more applications than places, the published oversubscription criteria, as set out in the admission arrangements for the relevant academic year, will be applied. Admissions policies can be found on our school website via the link at the bottom of this page. Parents are advised to read the admission arrangements carefully before making their application. If there are no places available, the child will be added to the waiting list. Please see the admission arrangements for more details.
You will be advised of the outcome of your application in writing as soon as possible. Applicants must be informed of the outcome of their application within 15 school days of receipt, but the aim is to notify applicants of the outcome of their application within 10 school days of receipt. You have the right to appeal to an independent appeal panel if your application is unsuccessful.
If you have any questions in relation to in-year admissions please contact the main school office on 01207 270 396 . You may also wish to discuss in-year applications with Gateshead Council’s admissions team on 0191 433 8589.
Reception Admissions:
The school holds an Open Day during April/May of every academic year prior to the Reception Admissions window opening (the portal usually opens mid September each year and closes mid January). For admission to our Reception class please keep an eye out for your local council’s deadlines for the current academic year.

Once Reception places have been offered we hold a parents’ meeting in the summer term to meet staff, discuss requirements and answer any queries parents might have. At present the vast majority of the children coming to our school are already familiar with the school and its staff by being in the Little Hearts Pre-school. Both sets of staff work closely together to ensure a smooth transition from Pre–School to the Reception class. The school also has very good contacts with surrounding nursery providers and parents can be assured that if their child has not attended the Little Hearts they will have an equally smooth transition to full time education. For more information take a look at our Reception New Intake Information Booklet.
In September, children usually spend mornings only in school for their first few days in school and this is gradually built up before becoming full time students. This enables parents and staff to build good working relationships, and gently introduces school routine to the child. Each child is given a ‘buddy’, an older child who ensures they settle in well and any difficulties are spotted quickly.
Little Hearts Pre-School Admissions:
Although based in the school building, Little Hearts Pre-School is managed separately to school so they deal with their own admissions. To enquire about spaces please contact them via email lttlhearts@gmail.com or Mobile 07789 292 110
Secondary Admissions:
For our Year 6s who are planning on leaving us to join St. Thomas More, Blaydon (our designated feeder school) or to other secondary education providers in the area, the portal usually opens early September each year and closes at the end of October.
