Attendance / Leave of Absence Information
Attendance is vital to every child in every school throughout the country and there is a statutory right on every school to monitor the attendance of its pupils closely throughout each academic year. At Sacred Heart, we recognise the very strong link that exists between a pupil’s level of attendance and their achievement, we recognise however that illness and other circumstances can interfere with a child’s attendance and as a school, we aim for at least 98% attendance throughout the year.
Illness: Please ensure you contact the school office before 9:30 am on the first day of absence, failure to do so will result in the absence being recorded as an unauthorised absence until a reason is confirmed.
Please contact the school as soon as you are aware of the appointment and where possible parents should arrange for these appointments to be before or after school time. We do understand, however, that this is not always possible.
Levels of Attendance
The attendance of a child can be summarised using the chart below, the school monitors every child’s attendance and takes action when necessary. The procedure and defined actions of the school can be found in the Attendance Policy, linked below. As you can see below, each absence can largely impact the child’s education, and in some cases, the progress cannot be recouped during the school year. If you have any queries about your child’s attendance please contact the school office or your child’s class teacher.
Attendance data is published as part of our weekly bulletin. Our school target is at least 96% as a school. Under some exceptional circumstances, Leave of Absence may be required during the school term, a leave of absence form request must be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the dates the child will be absent from school, forms are available either below or paper copies can be found just outside the school office door.
Absence due to Illness
We understand that children become ill or feel unwell and we understand the impact this can have on a child’s attendance. Have a look at our school guidance on how to decide whether to keep your child off school: here.
Children of school-age who are registered at a school must, by law, attend that school regularly. Although it is a legal requirement of all parents to ensure their child regularly attends school there may be occasions when a child has to miss school. If for example, the child becomes unwell.
